Individuals living with a serious illness or disease may face any number of physical, financial and emotional challenges. A total of 56 million Americans, which represents one in five Americans, lives with a disability and 38 million Americans, which represents one in ten Americans, lives with a severe disability. According to statistics concerning the issue, greater than one in four 20-year olds will become disabled before reaching retirement age.

To qualify for Social Security disability benefits, an individual must have significant enough work history to qualify for benefits, which is usually ten years of work history, and have a medical condition meeting the definition of disability for Social Security disability purposes. A medical condition meeting Social Security's definition of disability is a medical condition that is expected to last one year or greater, or result in death, and prevents the individual from performing any work.

Some medical conditions are considered by the Social Security Administration to be so severe that they meet the administration's strict definition of disability. Medical conditions, including certain illnesses and diseases, that qualify are included on its Compassionate Allowances list. This list of illnesses and diseases allows disability applicants to receive expedited benefits for conditions on the list. Illnesses and diseases named on the Compassionate Allowances list, as well as some mental conditions, are some of the types of disability that individuals may receive Social Security disability benefits for. Additional medical conditions that may qualify for disability can include cancers, congestive heart failure, other diseases, as well as other types of illnesses and medical conditions.
