Social Security Disability includes mental disorders

Many people in New Jersey understand that Social Security disability benefits may be available to victims of severe illnesses such as cancer or heart disease or serious injuries with long-term effects such as spinal injuries or neck injuries. These types of conditions are often far easier to diagnose, as the symptoms are tangible and typically visible on exams such as x-rays, MRIs or CAT scans.

But it is important for Americans to know that Social Security disability benefits also cover many mental conditions. Some mental conditions such as mental retardation or schizophrenia may be easier to spot due to the abilities or actions of the victim. But the mental conditions extend beyond the obvious and may include depression, bipolar disorder, panic attacks, anxiety attacks and even memory impairment.

In order to qualify for either Social Security Disability Insurance, or Supplemental Security Income, one must prove that the disability is expected to last at least a year or end in death, and that the condition is debilitating enough that the victim cannot maintain gainful employment. Proving that these conditions exist to meet the criteria may not be easy, however, especially for mental conditions.

Finding a law professional with the necessary experience to handle your case is not always easy. The law offices of Levine Law, LLC Disability Law Firm has handled over 2,000 cases, helping Americans suffering from debilitating diseases, injuries and mental conditions obtain Social Security disability benefits they may need to survive. Although the Social Security programs are not designed to fully cover medical expenses or rehabilitation costs, the monthly payments may help victims while they fight their condition and focus on getting healthier.
