Winter in New Jersey brings with it slip and fall accidents

New Jersey residents are well-aware of the hazards associated with the winter season. Although we were lucky with a reasonably mild winter last year, we may not be as lucky this year, and any time cold or wintery weather rolls in, residents are vulnerable to accidents. Whether it is a car accident or even a slip-and-fall accident, it is not uncommon for victims to suffer serious injuries such as a neck, spine or head injury.

Brain injuries can take many forms, from a mild concussion to a catastrophic traumatic brain injury (TBI.) A TBI typically occurs when an impact or trauma, such as a slip-and-fall, damages the brain. Mild TBI injuries could lead to symptoms such as lightheadedness or dizziness, blurred vision, fatigue and commonly headaches.

Serious traumatic brain injuries may cause initial unconsciousness or a vegetative state, and may require surgery to repair or remove ruptured blood vessels or bruised brain tissues. Long-term or life-long effects of a TBI include cognitive problems, a loss of senses or sensory processing and mental health issues such as anxiety and depression.

Victims of a traumatic brain injury who are unable to work for at least a year may want to pursue Social Security disability benefits for injuries to help supplement financial costs such as medical expenses, rehabilitation and to offset financial hurdles associated with not working. The application process is not always simple, and may be more difficult for victims already suffering from disabling conditions. You may want to speak with a law firm to see whether you qualify and to help you through the application process.
