Coping with the aftermath of motor vehicle accidents

The New Jersey State Police website keeps a running total of motor vehicle accidents and fatalities in the state. As of this writing, the site reported that there had been 61 fatal traffic accidents and 63 fatalities in the state so far in 2017. At this time last year, there had been 74 fatalities in New Jersey traffic accidents.

No doubt, all of us have seen statistics such as these. Reports on fatalities should spark serious conversations about how to improve safety on the roads.

Unfortunately, what sometimes gets lost in these discussions is the fact that all motor vehicle accidents are not fatal. Many victims of motor vehicle accidents must cope with serious and permanent injury. Often, the injured are unable to return to work for months, or even permanently.

There are a number of ways people can seek financial help coping with the financial aftermath of a serious injury. One way is through Social Security Disability benefits.

Injuries with serious long term effects may be covered for Social Security Disability benefits for injuries. It must first be proven that the injury is severe enough that the victim can no longer maintain gainful employment, and it must be proven that the condition is expected to last at least a year or end in death.

If you or someone you know has been the victim of an accident, Social Security Ddisability benefits may help with finances while you try to recover and get back to work. Although the benefits are not designed to cover all medical expenses, they can help provide some form of relief with day to day expenses to make up for lost wages while you recover. The process can be time consuming, so it may be in your best interests to get started with your application as soon as possible.
