Former Marine waits for disability benefits for breast cancer

When someone in Cherry Hill gets sick, he or she typically takes a few days off of work, recovers and then goes back to work. In more serious cases, he or she may need to take an extended leave, but, in the end, will find his or her way back to work. Unfortunately, some people are so severely ill that they cannot work; they have long-standing medical conditions that make it impossible to hold down any job, much less the career that they had previously had. For these people, the Social Security disability insurance benefits program provides the necessary funds that individuals with chronic, debilitating illnesses need to cover their daily costs of living.

For a former Marine with Stage 4 breast cancer, she has filed for disability benefits to help supplement the family income. Before she was too sick to work, she and her husband had been living paycheck to paycheck. Without her income as a medical lab technician, however, they are likely finding themselves in debt.

The woman believes that she developed breast cancer after being exposed to contaminated water at Camp Lejeune in the 1980s. There have been many individuals, including many men who have developed breast cancer after drinking, cooking with and showering in the water at Camp Lejeune, many of whom had no family history of the disease. Moreover, the toxins found in the water has also been linked to birth defects.

Unfortunately, the Minnesota woman must go through the lengthy disability process before she can start to receive benefits. It is a process that often goes much quicker when helped by a disability insurance attorney.
