Can temporary injury qualify one for SSD benefits in New Jersey?

New Jersey workers in all kinds of professions can suffer injuries. Though it may be more common to expect people to be hurt in certain industries, such as construction or manufacturing, even supposedly safe office jobs have their risks. The rise of carpal tunnel syndrome and other physical ailments that beset sedentary workers show that just about any job can result in injury. Further, injuries can occur to workers when they are "off the clock," that can affect a person's ability to do his or her job.

While those who have been injured at work may qualify for benefits such as workers' compensation, what if that is not enough, or if the injury occurred outside of the workplace? While most people think of Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits as being for those with chronic conditions, it is possible to receive such benefits because of an injury that will eventually heal.

When determining whether a person is disabled, the Social Security Administration(SSA) looks at whether the person is unable to do the work he or she used to do, and whether the condition interfering with the person's ability to work has lasted, or is expected to last, more than one year or result in death. Thus, as long as an injury is serious enough to stop one from working for at least 12 months, that person may qualify for SSD benefits.

Of course, that is not the only criteria the SSA uses to evaluate disability cases. Various state and federal requirements may also come into play when determining eligibility for benefits due to injury.
